Zakai Zeigler’s second-half performance leads Vols past Texas in SEC Tournament
Tennessee basketball advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals after a dominant second half, spearheaded by Zakai Zeigler. The Vols defeated Texas 83-72, ending the Longhorns’ SEC Tournament run.
Zeigler, who sat out much of the first half after picking up two quick fouls, led Tennessee’s explosive second-half rally to build a comfortable lead over the Longhorns.
Zeigler recorded 19 points and 6 assists, with his 19-point performance in the second half proving crucial for the victory. Additionally, he set a new program record for most assists in a season with 228.
While Zeigler shined in the second half, Chaz Lanier paced the team in scoring with 19 points in the first half. He finished the game with 23 points.
Jahmai Mashack also played a key role in the win. He contributed across the board, defending the glass, distributing the ball, and scoring. Mashack continued to prove his value to the team, sharing the Vols’ MVP responsibility in another March standout performance.
It was a collective team effort for the Vols, with each player contributing in their own way. Whether on offense or defense, the wings and bigs all bought into the game plan, which led to a dominant second half.
Tennessee now faces a semifinal matchup against No. 1 Auburn. The Tigers defeated Ole Miss 62-57 in their quarterfinal, though the Rebels outscored Auburn in the second half, nearly pulling off an upset.
The Vols and Tigers will kick off Saturday’s SEC Tournament semifinal slate with a 1:00 PM ET tip-off. The winner will secure a spot in the SEC Tournament Championship Game.
