Detroit Lions Avoid Major Offseason Setback With Key Signing

Detroit’s latest offseason signing almost went elsewhere, but ultimately, the player chose the Lions over another contender.

The Lions have been actively making roster moves as they regroup from a tough playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. The 2024 season held high expectations for Detroit, with hopes of finally reaching the Super Bowl. However, those aspirations came to an abrupt end on January 18 with Washington’s victory.

Despite the disappointment, the team has wasted no time making key additions. One of their newest acquisitions nearly signed with a different franchise before deciding that Detroit was the right fit.

Commanders Almost Landed Lions’ Newest Cornerback

Amid significant roster changes, the Lions managed to secure a crucial addition: cornerback D.J. Reed. The former New York Jets defender signed a three-year, $48 million contract, solidifying Detroit’s secondary.

During his introductory press conference on March 14, Reed revealed that he had been considering both the Lions and the Commanders before finalizing his decision. His reasoning for choosing Detroit was clear.

“I wanted to get paid. I wanted to play with dogs,” Reed explained. “I’m joining a great team that has a real shot at winning the Lombardi.”

He also expressed excitement about teaming up with Detroit’s standout safeties. “Playing alongside two All-Pro safeties is going to elevate my game,” he added.

Reed, a Kansas State product, steps in as a replacement for Carlton Davis, who left for a lucrative deal with the New England Patriots. Davis’ departure was expected, given the financial challenges of keeping him on the roster.

How Reed Strengthens the Lions’ Defense

One of the top cornerbacks available in free agency, Reed brings a mix of physicality and skill to Detroit’s defense. Over the past three seasons with the Jets, he played a key role in shaping one of the league’s top pass defenses. His familiarity with former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn—now with the Jets—makes this signing even more significant.

In 46 games with New York, Reed recorded 220 tackles, 32 pass breakups, seven tackles for loss, and two interceptions. He consistently graded at 70 or higher in overall and coverage metrics from Pro Football Focus between 2022 and 2024.

Reed believes his playing style aligns well with Detroit’s defensive identity.

“I think it’s a great fit,” he said. “I play with grit. I’m relentless. I want to win every rep.”

He also emphasized his willingness to be physical. “A lot of corners don’t like to tackle, but I do. I’m aggressive when needed, and I can cover just as well,” Reed added.

With this signing, the Lions reinforce their secondary and send a strong message that they’re still serious contenders for a deep playoff run.
