Duke’s ACC Tournament triumph makes it clear that they should be the #1 overall seed in the big dance.
We’ve reached Selection Sunday 2025, and the Duke basketball team is riding a wave of momentum following its 73-62 victory over Louisville in the ACC Tournament Championship yesterday. The Blue Devils closed out both the regular season and the conference tournament on an impressive 11-game winning streak, making them a strong candidate for the top overall seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
After securing the conference tournament title, there is no logical reason why Duke shouldn’t be awarded the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Auburn had been projected as the top seed for most of the season, with both the Tigers and Duke widely regarded as the top two teams in college basketball.
However, Duke deserves the top spot because Auburn failed to win the SEC Tournament, losing to Tennessee 70-65 in the semifinals yesterday.
Despite this, Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology still places Auburn as the number one overall seed, even after the Tigers’ semifinal loss and Duke’s ACC Tournament triumph. Lunardi’s latest update came at 8:55 PM ET last night, even though Auburn’s game against Tennessee took place at 1:00 PM ET.
It simply doesn’t make sense to keep Auburn at the top when Duke won its conference tournament and the Tigers did not. While the ACC may not be as strong as the SEC—arguably one of the best conferences in history this season—Duke has done everything required to prove it is the best team in the nation and should be recognized as such.
Additionally, Duke captured the ACC title without its star freshman, Cooper Flagg, who suffered an injury in the quarterfinal win over Georgia Tech. Even without their best player, the Blue Devils defeated a tough UNC team in the semifinals and Louisville in the final.
Furthermore, Duke and Auburn met earlier this season, and Duke emerged victorious, winning 84-78 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Later today, Tennessee will face Florida for the SEC Tournament championship, and the winner will have a strong argument for the NCAA Tournament’s top overall seed, as both teams are currently projected as top-two seeds. Florida is a projected 1-seed, while Tennessee is a projected 2-seed.
If Florida wins and claims the top seed, that argument is somewhat reasonable—the best team from the best conference. However, Duke has done everything necessary to earn the top spot, and there is no justification for Auburn remaining ahead of Jon Scheyer’s squad.
