Jared Goff is opening up about a memorable and personal interaction with Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes.
The Lions quarterback has had an eventful NFL career, transitioning from Los Angeles to Detroit. In a widely known trade from March 2021, the Rams acquired Matthew Stafford, while the Lions received Goff, along with first-round draft picks in 2022 and 2023, and a third-round pick in 2021.
Moving from California’s sunshine to Detroit’s harsh winters was a big change, but Goff has fully embraced it. He has also been delivering some of the best performances of his career since joining the Lions.
On March 13, Goff appeared on the Glue Guys podcast, where he spoke about football and life. During the interview, he recounted his first conversation with Campbell and Holmes after the trade.
Goff first mentioned receiving a call from Rams head coach Sean McVay. “A minute later, it’s on Twitter. Not even 30 seconds after,” he said, describing how fast the news spread.
Soon after, Goff received uplifting news. “Brad (Holmes) and Dan (Campbell) were trying to reach me, but I was getting so many calls that I started ignoring them all,” he explained.
He continued, “Then my agent texted me, saying, ‘Brad is trying to reach you. Can you answer? He keeps getting sent to voicemail.’ I said, ‘Oh yeah, sure, okay. Got it.’”
Goff added, “Brad finally got through. He was like, ‘Hey Jared, Jared,’ just full of excitement. ‘Finally, we got you! We’re thrilled to have you here.’ Then I hear Dan in the background, ‘Jared, I can’t wait to have you here. We’re pumped.’”
At that moment, Goff felt something special. “That feeling of having someone believe in you, excited for you to join their team, and seeing the opportunity to build something from the ground up—that was the defining moment,” he said.
The Lions quarterback said he’ll always remember thinking, “Let’s do this,” realizing that the faith from Campbell and Holmes was all he needed.
Goff also reflected on his time in Los Angeles, stepping in for veteran Case Keenum, and how Keenum played a crucial role in mentoring him.
“He had the ability to put ego aside,” Goff said. “He understood his role was to support the starter… He worked hard to challenge the defense in practice. But in the quarterback room, there’s always one leader, and everyone needs to recognize their place. He fully understood that.”
Now, Goff is thriving in Detroit. Fans are eager to see if the Lions can finally reach their first Super Bowl in the 2025 season.
