NFL free-agent wide receiver turned down Dak Prescott’s offer to join him and instead chose to sign with the Cowboys.

Although NFL free agency is technically less than a week old, the market is nearly dried up. There are still some quarterbacks in need of homes—like the Giants, Steelers, and Browns—but most of the top players have already been signed.

The last major move might have occurred on Friday when the Seattle Seahawks secured Cooper Kupp with a three-year, $45 million deal. Despite several suitors, the appeal of playing close to home for Kupp was hard to match.

Kupp hails from Yakima, Washington.

Kupp led the NFL in 2021, earning the receiving Triple Crown with 145 catches, 1,947 yards, and 16 touchdowns. However, he has faced injury struggles in recent years, playing just 32 games over the past three seasons. His yards per game have decreased each year since.

Last season, Kupp averaged 59.2 yards per game.

Despite that, Kupp remains a strong secondary option for a team already set with a star WR1 and quarterback. That’s the case with Dallas, which has CeeDee Lamb at WR1 and Dak Prescott at quarterback.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both Prescott and Lamb reached out to Kupp, hoping to convince him to join Dallas to fill the void at WR2. However, Kupp declined, and the Cowboys weren’t willing to pay the price to land him.

“Last Thursday, the Cowboys reached out about Cooper Kupp and they were interested,” Schefter said on his podcast, via SInow.com. “Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, who I understand it, were on the phone with Cooper Kupp talking to him about the idea of coming to Dallas, and it was floated out there. And then the Cowboys heard the numbers, and they were at numbers that the Cowboys weren’t going to get to.”

At this point, the underwhelming options to be Dallas’ WR2 are Jonathan Mingo and jalan Tolbert.
