By all measures, the Detroit Lions boast a formidable roster. Despite their divisional-round playoff exit against the surging Washington Commanders, they entered the season as Super Bowl favorites and should remain strong contenders in 2025.
However, even the best teams must keep improving. Quarterback Jared Goff struggled in that postseason loss, and while the Lions already have elite receivers in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, adding another weapon could elevate their offense further.
In its most recent mock draft, CBS Sports projects Detroit selecting University of Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III with the No. 28 overall pick.
“Don’t let Burden’s 2024 stats fool you — he’s a premier receiver prospect with upside galore,” wrote Chris Trapasso.
Burden posted 61 receptions for 676 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, but his previous season was even stronger, with 86 catches, 1,212 yards, and nine touchdowns. Over three college seasons, he amassed 2,263 receiving yards and scored 25 total touchdowns.
His athleticism stands out, running a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, and an NFL.com scouting report describes him as having “five-star athleticism and playmaking ability” as well as “multifaceted run-after-catch talent.”
Detroit led the NFL in points scored and first downs last season. Adding Burden to an already explosive offense could make them even more dangerous once he adjusts to the pro game.
