While many expect Jameson Williams to eventually sign a lucrative extension with the Detroit Lions, not everyone is convinced. With Amon-Ra St. Brown already commanding top-tier money, handing Williams another massive deal might strain the team’s budget.
If Detroit’s front office shares that concern, having a contingency plan is crucial. CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso believes they might already have one.
In his latest three-round mock draft, Trapasso projects the Lions selecting Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden in the first round. The reasoning? Preparing for a future without Williams. Burden’s production dipped in 2024—he recorded 61 catches for 676 yards and six touchdowns—but those numbers don’t tell the full story.
“Don’t let Burden’s 2024 stats fool you — he’s a premier receiver prospect with upside galore,” Trapasso said.
In 2023, Burden was among college football’s most dynamic playmakers, catching 86 passes for 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns. Over his college career, he totaled 192 receptions, 2,263 yards, and 21 touchdowns. He’s more than just fast—his smooth route-running and playmaking ability after the catch make him a major threat.
At the NFL Combine, Burden impressed with a 4.41-second 40-yard dash and a 1.54-second 10-yard split. Standing at 6 feet and 206 pounds, he has the size, strong hands, and speed to develop into a premier outside receiver.
Detroit’s aerial attack is already formidable with St. Brown and Williams, but nothing in the NFL lasts forever. Adding Burden would help ensure the Lions remain explosive if Williams becomes too expensive to keep. He could be a long-term asset that keeps Detroit’s offense thriving for years.
