Detroit Lions Secure Potential Successor for Jameson Williams in 2025 NFL Mock Draft

While many expect Jameson Williams to eventually sign a lucrative extension with the Detroit Lions, not everyone shares that belief.

With Amon-Ra St. Brown already commanding a high salary, committing another massive deal to Williams could stretch the budget too far. If Detroit’s front office agrees, they may already be planning for the future. According to CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso, that plan could involve a top draft pick.

Trapasso’s latest three-round mock draft projects the Lions selecting Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden in the first round. The reasoning? Preparing for a future without Williams. Burden’s production dipped in 2024 — he recorded 61 receptions for 676 yards and six touchdowns — but those numbers don’t tell the full story.

“Don’t let Burden’s 2024 stats fool you — he’s a premier receiver prospect with upside galore,” Trapasso noted.

In 2023, Burden was one of college football’s most dynamic playmakers, catching 86 passes for 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns. Over his college career, he amassed 192 receptions, 2,263 yards, and 21 touchdowns. His speed is only part of the equation—he’s also an exceptional route runner who excels after the catch.

At the NFL Combine, Burden turned heads with a 4.41-second 40-yard dash and a 1.54-second 10-yard split. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 206 pounds, he possesses the size, reliable hands, and speed to develop into a premier outside receiver.

Detroit’s passing game is already potent with St. Brown and Williams, but nothing is guaranteed in the NFL. Adding a talent like Burden would provide insurance in case Williams becomes too expensive to retain. He could be a long-term asset, ensuring the Lions’ offense remains explosive for years to come.
