Caleb Etienne Shines at Big 12 Pro Day, Emerging as a Legitimate NFL Draft Prospect

BYU’s Caleb Etienne Shines at Big 12 Pro Day, Boosting NFL Draft Prospects

The All-Big 12 First Team left tackle, once overlooked by many NFL scouts, may now be on the radar after his stellar performance at the Big 12 Pro Day.

Caleb Etienne made a major impact at the Big 12 Pro Day last week.

His performance could potentially secure him a spot in the later rounds of the upcoming NFL Draft, set for April 24-26.

Curious about his impressive showing? Here are the highlights:

Etienne’s Exceptional Relative Athletic Score

One of the most effective ways to assess NFL prospects is through the Relative Athletic Score (RAS). This metric compiles various results from the NFL combine and converts them into a single score for each position. RAS allows for more accurate comparisons between prospects at the same position, like comparing offensive tackles to other tackles, rather than comparing different positions.

Caleb Etienne’s 9.27 RAS places him in the 93rd percentile among offensive tackles in the RAS database, which has data dating back to 1987.

To put it simply, among every 100 offensive tackle prospects, Etienne outperformed 92 of them.

Etienne’s size is deemed “great,” as expected for a 6-foot-7, 328-pound tackle. His scores for explosion and speed also stand out as “great” for an offensive line prospect. Notably, his 9-foot-6 broad jump ranks in the 96th percentile, while his remarkable 5.01-second 40-yard dash places him in the 93rd percentile.

The only aspect holding Etienne back from an even higher RAS is his “poor” agility grade, with a shuttle score of 1.31. This lack of agility could raise concerns for NFL scouts regarding his ability to keep up with speedy rushers.

Why Etienne’s Pro Day Performance is Significant

Before the Big 12 Pro Day, Caleb Etienne was largely absent from NFL mock drafts, despite his impressive size and a standout season as an All-Big 12 First Team selection.

Etienne’s performance at the Big 12 Pro Day could change the narrative.

Every NFL team requires depth on the offensive line, particularly at tackle. Over his two seasons at BYU, Caleb played both tackle positions and even took on some guard duties in 2023, showcasing his versatility. NFL scouts may now view Etienne’s size, strength, and impressive Pro Day metrics as an indication of his potential, possibly developing him at either tackle position or transitioning him to a guard role.

Before his standout Pro Day, Caleb Etienne’s best hope of reaching the NFL was through signing as an undrafted free agent.

With his strong Pro Day showing, Etienne now stands a real chance of being selected in the later rounds, as a massive and highly-athletic offensive lineman with promising upside.
