Duke Basketball Star Shares Milestone With Head Coach
Duke basketball guard Tyrese Proctor is currently experiencing a hot streak not seen in Blue Devils basketball since Jon Scheyer was a player.
Entering his sophomore year last season, there were high expectations for Tyrese Proctor to have a breakout season. Though he didn’t fully meet those expectations, the Australian guard returned to Durham and is now undoubtedly drawing national attention in his third NCAA Tournament.
Standing at 6-foot-6, Proctor has been a consistent and reliable veteran presence for Duke this season, playing a key role in leading Jon Scheyer’s third Blue Devils squad to a 33-3 record and a Sweet 16 appearance as the No. 1 seed in the East Region. Along the way, Proctor has delivered standout performances.
However, none of these individual performances have been as impressive as his recent stretch of games, where Proctor has made six or more three-pointers in three consecutive games.
This run includes two 19-point performances, first against Louisville in the ACC Tournament final, followed by another 19-point showing against Mount St. Mary’s in the NCAA Tournament Round of 64. He then set career highs of 25 points and seven three-pointers in Duke’s 89-66 Round of 32 win over Baylor in Raleigh on Sunday.
Proctor’s hot streak has earned him multiple Blue Devil records, one of which he now shares with his head coach.
With games featuring six and seven three-pointers made, Proctor became the first Blue Devil to hit five or more threes in consecutive NCAA Tournament games since Scheyer, who achieved this as a senior during Duke’s 2010 championship run.
Proctor also holds the program record for most made threes (13) across two NCAA Tournament games and has recorded the most three-pointers (19) over any three-game span since Jason Williams in 2001.
Tyrese Proctor and his teammates are now focused on joining Scheyer and Williams as Duke basketball national champions. Their pursuit continues with a battle against the No. 4 seed Arizona Wildcats in the East Regional semifinal on Thursday at around 9:39 p.m. ET (CBS).
