The Detroit Lions have had strong success with their recent first-round selections, landing standout edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and dynamic running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
However, speedy wide receiver Jameson Williams, who missed most of his rookie year recovering from an ACL tear, remains somewhat of a question mark. While he has demonstrated glimpses of star potential, his struggles with discipline on and off the field have raised concerns.
This offseason, the Lions must make a crucial decision on Williams, as he enters the final season of his rookie deal with the possibility of a contract extension. However, one insider is advising caution, urging Detroit to be patient with their young receiver.
Detroit Free Press reporter Dave Birkett recommended that the Lions take a wait-and-see approach instead of rushing into a long-term deal for Williams.
Birkett highlighted Williams’ inconsistency in staying on the field, noting his missed time due to injuries and two separate league suspensions—one for violating gambling policies and another for performance-enhancing substances.
“No agreement is on the horizon for Williams and the Lions, and there’s a case to be made that Detroit should delay handing out a lucrative contract,” Birkett explained. “Given Williams’ limited and inconsistent NFL resume so far, the smartest move for the team is to be patient with a new deal.”
Williams has progressed steadily over three seasons, finishing 2024 with 58 catches, 1,001 yards, and seven touchdowns.
Birkett added that Detroit could opt for short-term commitments, such as picking up Williams’ fifth-year option for around $15.5 million and possibly utilizing the franchise tag later.
“If they go that route, the Lions will have control of Williams’ rights through 2026 with the option to tag him beyond that,” Birkett noted. “His future should become clearer over the next year.”
The Lions might also have an opportunity to land another explosive wide receiver in the upcoming NFL draft, reducing the urgency to lock Williams into a long-term deal. Christian Booher of SI.com projected that Texas receiver Matthew Golden could still be available at pick No. 28, providing Detroit with one of the fastest wideouts in the draft.
“He has elite speed, as shown by his 4.29-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. Additionally, he possesses sharp footwork, can run any route in the tree, and has reliable hands,” Booher wrote.
Booher further emphasized Golden’s versatility, noting that he could contribute in multiple roles for Detroit.
“With some return experience as well, Golden could impact both offense and special teams at the pro level,” Booher added. “If the Lions want to add another speedster to their receiving corps, Golden is one of the best choices available.”
