BYU Basketball Featured in Hilarious The Onion Piece Before Sweet 16 Game
As BYU prepares for a Sweet 16 game against Alabama, the Cougars’ popularity is at an all-time high. From Kevin Young’s success in his first year as head coach to Richie Saunders’ Tater Tot NIL Deal, there’s no shortage of intriguing stories coming out of Provo.
One outlet took the chance to highlight BYU with a hilarious twist. On Tuesday, The Onion’s headline read, “Star BYU Player Suspended After Testing Positive For Coffee.” Being featured on such a well-known satire site is a sign that you’ve truly made it. The piece was lighthearted and included some humorous jabs.
“In a devastating blow to the team’s chances of winning the NCAA men’s tournament, star Brigham Young University player Mihailo Boskovic was suspended Tuesday after testing positive for coffee,” the fictional article stated. “After detecting the illicit substance on Boskovic’s breath before a game, an immediate test was ordered and confirmed the presence of performance-enhancing hot drinks in his system.”
This was a playful dig at the Mormon Church’s stance on the consumption of “hot drinks,” which includes coffee. “Drinks with names that include café or caffé, mocha, latte, espresso, or anything ending in -ccino are coffee and are against the Word of Wisdom,” according to the LDS website.
While coffee is off-limits for BYU, hot basketball is very much welcome. The Cougars will aim for a spot in the Elite Eight on Thursday night, which would mark their second appearance in school history and first since 1981. To get there, they’ll have to defeat No. 2 seed Alabama, who leads the NCAA with an average of 91.1 points per game.
BYU and Alabama will face off as part of the NCAA East Regional at 7:09 p.m. ET on CBS (Available on Fubo).
