BYU’s Projected Lottery Pick May Return for Another Year to Join No. 1 Incoming Freshman
The NCAA Tournament is now down to 12 teams with a real shot at claiming the national title. This March has seen fewer surprises than usual, with no Cinderella teams advancing past the second round. This trend has led many basketball experts to question the current state of the tournament.
One of the biggest surprises of this season has been the Brigham Young Cougars. After former head coach Mark Pope left to take the Kentucky job, his alma mater, many thought the Cougars would struggle. However, they exceeded expectations, finishing third in the Big 12.
Despite the coaching change, BYU landed 5-star recruit Egor Demin, a projected lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft. The expected one-and-done Demin has sparked interesting discussions after the Cougars’ loss to Alabama in the Sweet Sixteen. Not only did Alabama defeat them, but the Crimson Tide also made history by sinking 25 three-pointers during the game.
Following the defeat, Demin was asked about his future, given his high draft prospects. His response could be a good sign for Cougar fans.
“As you know, AJ is coming, and he might be one of the reasons I’d want to stay next year. My decision earlier this summer to come here wasn’t a mistake,” Demin told reporters.
Demin is referring to AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 player in the 2025 recruiting class, who has been committed to BYU for a while. The two would form an incredible duo and could have a major impact on the Big 12.
Whether Demin stays or not, BYU’s performance this season has quieted critics. The potential pairing of Dybantsa and Demin could become the best 1-2 punch in college basketball, and fans may get to see it next year.
