Kelly Stafford Shares Experience Flying Budget Airlines: ‘You Gotta Do What You Gotta Do’

Despite amassing over $350 million in career earnings, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford isn’t above choosing budget-friendly travel for his family of six.

His wife, Kelly Stafford, recounted a recent relatable trip with their four daughters—twins Sawyer and Chandler, 7, Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4.

“We flew Southwest [Airlines] literally like a month ago,” Kelly, 35, shared on the March 27 episode of her podcast, The Morning After. “Him and I and the kids. Listen, you do what you gotta do to get to where you need to be.”

Apparently, Matthew, 37, has long preferred flying with budget carriers, as Kelly’s cohost, Hank Winchester, pointed out.

“It was years ago when a friend texted me saying, ‘I’m on a Southwest flight, and I think Matthew Stafford is sitting here,’” Winchester recalled. “I was like, ‘What?!’”

Still, Matthew enjoys luxury when it’s available, especially when given “an upgrade situation” while traveling with Kelly.

“There’s no way he’d ever be like, ‘Here babe, take this,’” Kelly said on the podcast. “No chance. He’d be like, ‘See ya later!’ It wouldn’t even cross his mind. He’s like, ‘You’re small, I’m big. You’re in the back, I’m in the front. That’s just how it is.’”

She added, “Honestly, I can’t even argue. It’d look ridiculous if I sat up front while he was in the back.”

Regardless of seating arrangements, Kelly admitted she prefers tuning out fellow passengers.

“Do people actually talk on planes? No,” she said. “They watch their screens and do what they need to do. When people chat, I think, ‘Shh! This is a quiet zone!’”

Later in the podcast, Kelly revealed she and Matthew have been struggling with their twins, Sawyer and Chandler.

“They’ve decided they rule the world, know best, and have all the attitude,” Kelly said. “I’m exhausted.”

As discipline, she and Matthew initially canceled the twins’ upcoming birthday celebration.

“We told them, ‘The party is off because we can’t celebrate you guys right now with this behavior. We love you, but we don’t think you should have a celebration,’” Kelly recalled. “That’s truly how Matthew and I felt.”

However, they had to backtrack—for financial reasons—when Kelly realized their deposit was nonrefundable.

“Could we have eaten the cost? Absolutely,” Kelly admitted. “But we also thought, ‘Maybe this is a sign.’”

She added, “I had to tell them the party was back on. But I made it clear: ‘This is not because you changed your behavior. It’s only because Mommy and Daddy couldn’t get our money back.’”
