BYU Forward Kanon Catchings Joins Transfer Portal
Kanon Catchings, a 4-star recruit in the 2024 class, arrived at BYU last June after decommitting from Purdue. While some draft analysts had given him a first-round grade, Catchings struggled to find a consistent role at BYU, despite showcasing his potential. He started 15 games but eventually lost his starting spot and saw his minutes and responsibilities decrease. For the season, Catchings averaged 7.3 points and shot 35.5% from beyond the arc.

His standout performance of the season came during a home win over Baylor, where he scored 23 points, hitting 8-8 from the field and 4-4 from the free-throw line.
Catchings possesses great skills and can make difficult shots over defenders with his size. However, coach Kevin Young leaned toward more experienced players like Mawot Mag, Dawson Baker, and Trey Stewart, who exhibited fewer mental mistakes and were more disciplined in their assignments.
Catchings will likely attract attention from top programs in the transfer portal, with North Carolina being a potential landing spot. The Tar Heels’ new general manager, Jim Tanner, has a long-standing connection with Kanon’s aunt, Tamika Catchings, having served as her agent for years, which could help establish a family connection.
