Grizzlies Dismissed Jenkins for Morant’s Success
Following the unexpected firing of Taylor Jenkins with just nine games remaining in the regular season, new details are emerging about the decision to part ways with him.
A report from The Athletic reveals that Memphis dismissed Jenkins to better utilize star guard Ja Morant within the team’s offense. The issue stemmed from Morant’s dissatisfaction with the offensive system Jenkins and new assistant coach Noah LaRoche had implemented, both of whom were let go. Jenkins had tried to reintegrate the old offensive style that Morant preferred, but the franchise ultimately decided to part ways with him. The report suggests that Jenkins was closely aligned with Morant.
“Jenkins had started to reintroduce some of the plays Morant favors, such as the pick-and-roll and plays involving screens to free Morant,” a league source explained. “This might have angered Kleiman, which could have contributed to Jenkins’ firing, but it was LaRoche who initially moved the team away from ball screens — and now he’s gone as well.”
In addition to the offensive adjustments, other factors contributed to Jenkins’ dismissal. Despite trying to restore elements of the offense, the Grizzlies had posted a 9-13 record in their last 22 games after a strong start of 35-16. Tensions within the locker room and the organization also played a role in the decision. With only eight games remaining in the regular season, assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo has been appointed as the interim head coach.
While Iisalo has limited time as interim coach, the Grizzlies’ head coaching position will be highly sought after in the offseason. With Ja Morant, former Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr., and a well-rounded roster featuring both experienced veterans and promising rookies, Memphis is in a strong position to attract a top-tier coach.
By firing Jenkins to better fit Morant’s playing style, Memphis now faces the challenge of adjusting quickly with limited time left before the NBA Playoffs.
