Aidan Hutchinson’s Heartfelt Response to Lions Teammate’s Unexpected Retirement

Detroit Lions star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson has never known an NFL season without John Cominsky as his teammate.

Hutchinson was drafted No. 2 overall in 2022, the same year Cominsky joined the Lions as a free agent after two years with the Atlanta Falcons.

However, Hutchinson will have to adjust next season, as Cominsky announced his surprising retirement following a missed 2024 campaign due to a torn MCL.

“After six years in the NFL, I am officially medically retiring,” Cominsky wrote on Instagram. “I’m proud of my career, but the toll of injuries has outweighed my desire to keep playing.”

“… Thank you to the Detroit Lions for claiming me off waivers, offering a second contract, and allowing me to prove myself as an NFL starter. Thanks to the front offices and coaches who believed in me and helped me grow.”

“… Most importantly, my marriage grew stronger, and I welcomed two beautiful children. Their arrivals came at perfect times, pushing me to the finish line. I step away with my family in mind, bringing me peace in this tough decision.”

While all of Cominsky’s teammates likely felt the impact of his decision, it was especially personal for Hutchinson, who lined up alongside him for two of the past three seasons.

Hutchinson left a heartfelt message on Cominsky’s Instagram post, letting him know his presence will be missed.

“Gonna miss ya dude,” Hutchinson commented.

Hutchinson missed 12 games in the 2024 season after fracturing his tibia and fibula in a Week 6 win over the Dallas Cowboys. At the time of his injury, he led the NFL with 7.5 sacks.

Cominsky finishes his career with 107 tackles, 7.5 sacks, six passes defensed, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery. He played in 57 games, starting 20, with 19 of those starts coming in Detroit.
