After Kevin Willard departed for the Villanova Wildcats following the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16, the Maryland Terrapins swiftly began their search for a new head coach. Just days later, they have secured his replacement.
On Tuesday, the Maryland Men’s Basketball X account announced that the Terrapins have appointed Buzz Williams as their new head coach.
Williams previously led the Texas A&M Aggies for six seasons, guiding them to three NCAA Tournament appearances. During the 2024-25 season, the Aggies posted a 23-11 record and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. They triumphed over the Yale Bulldogs in the first round but were eliminated by the Michigan Wolverines in the Round of 32. Now, Williams is also moving on.
“College Park is buzzing!” Maryland shared. “Maryland welcomes Buzz Williams as its new Head Coach.”
Buzz Williams boasts a coaching record of 373 wins and 228 losses, giving him a 62.1% winning percentage. Given his credentials, Maryland fans were understandably excited about his arrival.
“Buzz is strong,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “As a Kentucky fan, I can say Buzz can coach. He has proven himself in the SEC and is an outstanding leader. Great hire.”
A fan declared, “Fantastic hire,” while another echoed, “Good hire!”
A fifth supporter defended Williams from skeptics, stating, “Some may dislike it, but Buzz is a great coach, and I’m eager to see his vision for Maryland Basketball!”
“He is an excellent coach,” a sixth poster remarked.
Whether Williams can elevate a Terrapins squad that finished 27-9 last season remains to be seen. Nonetheless, expectations for him are undeniably high.
