BYU Experiences Loss of Several Players to Transfer Portal

BYU Loses Several Players to Transfer Portal

The transfer portal is now open, with players seeking better opportunities by adding their names to the list. Over 1,000 players are hoping to find a new destination in the coming weeks. For BYU, expect a few new additions in Provo through the portal.

The Cougars made their 32nd appearance in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, where they were eliminated in the Sweet 16 by Alabama. This offseason will be crucial for Kevin Young and his coaching staff as they aim to make a deeper run in the 2025-26 season. BYU has significant potential, especially with the commitment of top Utah Prep recruit, 6-foot-9 McDonald’s All-American AJ Dybantsa, who plays small forward. The challenge will be building around the “generational talent” knowing he will likely be a one-and-done before entering the NBA.

Currently, BYU basketball has the 11th-best recruiting class for 2025, according to 247Sports. The Cougars have also added Chamberlain Burgess and Xavion Staton. With top-tier recruiting classes, players often look to transfer to find more playing time, making the portal an integral part of the game.

This week, BYU freshman Elijah Crawford and Kanon Catchings, along with senior Dallin Hall, entered the transfer portal. Hall, who had been the Cougars’ starting point guard for 51 games, averaged 8.2 points per game, shooting 42% from the field and 36% from beyond the arc. Despite being a key player, Hall will finish his final year away from Provo.
