Philadelphia Eagles Alum and Seven-Time Pro Bowl Receiver Retires from NFL

A veteran wide receiver who most recently suited up for the Philadelphia Eagles is calling it a career at 36. The Eagles had a loaded receiver group in 2023 featuring A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Julio Jones.

Jones signed with Philadelphia in hopes of winning a championship, but the Eagles’ playoff run ended in the Wild Card round with a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He exited early after a first-half concussion and did not return to the field in 2024.

Julio Jones, a former wide receiver for the Eagles, is now officially retired

According to a clip shared on X by FalconsSzn, Jones used the social app “Squad” to reveal he’s stepping away from football.

“I’m retiring today,” Jones announced. “I started playing when I was eight years old, just a kid out of Foley, Alabama. It’s been a great journey. I’m thankful for my family’s support throughout everything. I couldn’t have done it without them. I also want to thank my teammates.”

In case you missed the news, 7-time Pro Bowl WR and likely Hall of Famer @juliojones_11 shared his retirement announcement today on the app “Squad.” Here’s the video from his page. Thank you, Jet.

Jones expressed gratitude to many throughout his career

He gave a shoutout to coach Nick Saban for guiding him during his college days at Alabama, where Jones was part of the 2009 national title team and earned All-American honors in 2010.

The Atlanta Falcons drafted Jones with the sixth overall pick in 2011. He remained with the Falcons through 2020. He played for the Titans in 2021, Buccaneers in 2022, and Eagles in 2023.

Over his NFL career, Jones played in 166 games, starting 153 of them. He totaled 914 catches for 13,703 yards and 66 scores.

He thanked Matt Ryan for helping him during his rookie year.

“Matt Ryan, appreciate you,” Jones said. “In the 2011 lockout, you let me crash at your place, went through the playbook with me, hit the fields to run routes. Thanks a lot, man.”

Jones had heartfelt words for Atlanta as well.

“I wanted to make this announcement for Atlanta,” he shared. “Much love to the city—I appreciate y’all. I’m doing this on 404 Day, fittingly. And to my other teams—Tennessee, Tampa Bay, Philly—thank you all for giving me a shot.”
