Seth Greenberg asserts that Buzz Williams and Trev Alberts never communicated
On ESPN’s College GameDay Saturday afternoon, Seth Greenberg made a bold assertion.
Greenberg, along with Jay Bilas and Jay Williams, discussed the coaching turnover in college basketball and ways to address the frequent changes that occur each offseason. Greenberg, in reference to Buzz Williams’ unexpected move from Texas A&M to Maryland, claimed that the former Aggies coach had not spoken with A&M’s athletic director, Trev Alberts, in over a year.
“Coaches change jobs for various reasons. Just like players switch schools for better opportunities, coaches change positions for the same reasons. … That’s just part of the process,” Greenberg explained on GameDay. “Let’s take Buzz Williams as an example. He hasn’t spoken to his athletic director in a year. Not a single word in 12 months. Once that relationship starts to deteriorate, it’s a win-win situation for the coach, the school, and the program. That’s how it works.”
Host Rece Davis then asked Greenberg to clarify if he meant that Williams and Alberts, who took over as Texas A&M’s AD on March 13, 2024, had never spoken to each other during their time together.
“My information is that they’ve had just one conversation in the entire year,” Greenberg confirmed. “And that’s from a very reliable source. I had one conversation with Jim Weaver in my final year. Just one.”
Greenberg’s last season at Virginia Tech ended when he was unexpectedly fired by Jim Weaver, the Hokies’ athletic director at the time, in a surprise press conference. Greenberg had been with the Hokies for nine seasons and was reportedly “shocked and blindsided” by the decision.
Williams’ departure to Maryland was equally surprising. Early reports, even before the Maryland job became available, suggested that Williams had been positioning himself to take over the Terps program if Kevin Willard left. Notably, Williams did not specifically mention Alberts in a statement shared on social media, instead addressing only “the administration” at Texas A&M.
Texas A&M hired Williams in April 2019 from Virginia Tech, but shortly after, the athletic director who brought him in, Scott Woodward, moved to LSU. Williams also worked under Ross Bjork, who left for Ohio State in 2024. Alberts became the third athletic director Williams worked with during his six-year tenure at Texas A&M.
