Former BYU WR Kody Epps Announces Retirement from Football
Kody Epps, former BYU wide receiver, has decided to retire from college football, as he shared in an Instagram post. After the 2024 season, Epps entered the transfer portal and committed to Western Kentucky, but now he’s stepping away from the game entirely.
“Yes, I’ve retired from football,” Epps said. “I’ve put it down. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve loved it…I’m so grateful for BYU and Western Kentucky. But after reflecting for a long time, I finally looked in the mirror and decided I wanted to explore who I truly am.”
Epps, who made eight catches for 54 yards in 2024, didn’t play in the final seven games of the season. He suffered an injury against Baylor in late September, which ultimately kept him out for the rest of the year.
Epps spent five years in the BYU program, totaling 73 receptions for 819 yards. His best season came in 2022, when he recorded 39 catches for 459 yards.
After the 2022 season, Epps was expected to be BYU’s leading receiver for 2023. However, he shocked many when he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal following Spring camp that year. A few days later, he decided to return to BYU.
In 2023, Epps was limited by an injury from Fall camp and didn’t have a significant role in the offense until the latter part of the season. In 2024, he was healthy, but with Chase Roberts and Darius Lassiter as the primary targets, Epps made only eight catches in the first five games before an injury ended his season.
