2025 NFL Draft: Raiders Could Stand in the Way of Giants Landing Both Hunter and Sanders
At this point, it’s fairly certain the Titans will select quarterback Cam Ward with the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
What comes next?
Assuming the Browns go with edge rusher Abdul Carter at No. 2, the Giants could aim to reunite Colorado’s stars — wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
That plan means the Giants would grab Hunter at No. 3 and then hope Sanders drops enough for them to trade up from No. 34 (the second pick in Round 2) into the latter part of Round 1.
But the Raiders at No. 6 might block that Hunter/Sanders reunion in New Jersey. The Patriots and Jaguars, holding picks 4 and 5, won’t be targeting a quarterback. The Raiders very well could be.
(Alternatively, if Hunter goes second and the Giants take Carter at No. 3, they’d still be eyeing a move up from No. 34 if Sanders starts to slide.)
The Raiders recently traded for Geno Smith from Seattle. But even after giving him an extension, they didn’t fully commit long-term — $66.5 million over two years, with a team option in 2027.
So if Las Vegas doesn’t see Smith, who’ll be 35 in October, as a long-term answer — and the deal suggests they don’t — they might grab Sanders with the sixth pick.
This scenario would echo what Atlanta did last year, committing $100 million to Kirk Cousins, then drafting Michael Penix eighth overall.
We all saw how that went. The Falcons benched Cousins and started Penix — now their QB1 — for the last three games of the season.
A similar story could unfold in Vegas with Smith and Sanders, ending the Giants’ chances of pairing their Colorado stars.
