When new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson made waves at the NFL Combine by praising the mobility of likely No. 1 pick Caleb Williams, it sparked some reactions — especially from Detroit fans and media.
After all, Johnson spent the last three years building one of the league’s top offenses with Jared Goff leading the charge in Detroit. Was it a slight aimed at his former quarterback?
“That wasn’t a dig at Jared,” Johnson told the press, according to the Detroit Free Press. “I’ve already spoken with Jared about it. Sometimes comments get twisted a bit. That wasn’t what I meant. Jared definitely gets that.”
Johnson went on to explain that his comments at the combine were simply highlighting Caleb Williams’ skillset — not meant as a knock on Goff. “It was really just about Caleb and what he offers,” Johnson clarified.
It’s understandable why Johnson would be excited about someone like Caleb Williams. Goff has earned praise for his calmness and accuracy in the pocket, but Williams adds a different dimension: he’s a dual-threat player who can escape pressure and make big plays on the move.
“As much as you try to keep it clean and go one-two-three in progression, the rush is closing in fast — having a guy like Caleb who can move and still find an open receiver downfield, that’s what excites me,” Johnson said at the combine, per Pride of Detroit. “It really fires me up because I haven’t worked with a player like that before. I’ve been on the other side of it, and it’s tough watching that kind of playmaking destroy your defense.”
Ben Johnson wasn’t taking shots — he was just showing enthusiasm for his new QB in Chicago. His relationship with Jared Goff remains intact, and the former Lions OC is proving once again why he’s considered one of football’s brightest young coaches.
