Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are reportedly nearing an agreement on a contract extension that would see the legendary forward remain in MLS for at least another year.
According to The Athletic on Friday, discussions between Miami and the 2024 MLS MVP are “at an advanced stage” to extend the 37-year-old’s current deal, which is set to end following the 2025 season.
Messi’s current agreement stands out in MLS history, with Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas stating in 2023 that it earns the World Cup champion between $50–60 million, combining his salary and his cut from Apple’s MLS broadcast deal and the league’s partnership with Adidas. It’s still unknown how these components might be adjusted if a new agreement is finalized.
There are clear reasons Miami would want to lock Messi in longer: he’s still delivering elite performances despite his age and injuries. He recently scored two goals and assisted another to help overturn a 2-0 deficit and beat LAFC 3-2 on aggregate in the Concacaf Champions Cup. Since his arrival on a free transfer in July 2023, Messi has recorded 42 goals and 21 assists in just 48 appearances.
Keeping Messi also provides broader value to the team. Miami’s success isn’t solely tied to the Argentine icon, but his presence is central to retaining other key figures like Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and head coach Javier Mascherano—all long-time teammates of Messi.
Additionally, Inter Miami plans to unveil its new home, Miami Freedom Park, later this year, aiming for a full move in 2026. While Miami already enjoys attention, its current venue, Chase Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, lacks the same prestige. Losing Messi right before that transition would be far from ideal, but Friday’s update suggests a positive outcome is on the horizon.
Speaking with Fútbol de Primera Radio earlier this week, Mas mentioned that Messi’s future should be resolved “within 60-90 days,” and showed confidence that the former Barcelona star would remain with the club.
“The stars are aligning for something special, a bright future for the team and for Lionel,” said Mas. “The decision is entirely his… My greatest hope has always been to watch Messi play in our new stadium in 2026. Hopefully, that becomes reality.”
