Ohio State’s defensive strategy gets a boost as Matt Patricia adds a Super Bowl-winning icon to his coaching team.

The Ohio State Buckeyes’ defense showed remarkable strength throughout the 2024 season, leading to a four-game College Football Playoff championship run that marked a significant step forward under coordinator Jim Knowles.

With Knowles now at Penn State, new defensive coordinator Matt Patricia has taken over, aiming to make his own mark on the team.

On Thursday, it was revealed that a special guest had attended Buckeyes practice—Super Bowl champion Malcolm Butler, who has strong ties to Patricia from their time together with the New England Patriots, including one of the most iconic plays in NFL history.

“Super Bowl champion Malcolm Butler has been coaching with Ohio State recently,” the Silver Bulletin’s X page reported on Thursday.

“Butler, famous for arguably the most memorable interception in NFL history, played under Ohio State DC Matt Patricia for many years.”

Butler spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Patriots and Titans, recording 83 pass break-ups, 406 tackles, and 17 interceptions.

His game-winning pick in Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015, denied Pete Carroll’s Seahawks a chance to upset Tom Brady and the Patriots, and remains one of the most legendary individual moments in NFL history.
