BYU Fan Favorite Enters the Transfer Portal
Although he played only about a minute per game this past season, Townsend Tripple’s influence at BYU went far beyond his stats.
After three years with the Cougars, the 6-foot-8 walk-on forward from Meridian, Idaho, has officially entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, according to Verbal Commits. Having redshirted in 2020 and returned from a mission, Tripple now seeks to use his remaining two years of eligibility elsewhere — likely aiming for a program that can provide the one thing BYU couldn’t: consistent playing time.
Even though his court time was limited, playing in just 19 games throughout his career, Tripple became a fan favorite at BYU. From his iconic mustache to his viral memes, he forged a deep connection with Cougar Nation that numbers and stats can’t define. His brief but energetic moments, like hitting a three-pointer against Texas Tech in a tough Big 12 matchup, only added to his growing legend.
His decision to leave is more about seeking opportunity than a lack of loyalty. BYU’s frontcourt was full of seasoned players, leaving limited space for Tripple to secure a significant role under head coach Kevin Young. Even though injuries to key forwards allowed him a temporary boost in playing time, once the starters returned, Tripple’s minutes dwindled again.
At 6-foot-8 with solid skills and high basketball intelligence, Tripple could contribute as a rotational player at a mid-major school or in a system that values stretch forwards. Wherever he ends up, he will undoubtedly bring leadership, determination, and a team-first attitude honed during his time at BYU.
Tripple now becomes the fourth Cougar to enter the transfer portal this offseason, following Kanon Catchings, Elijah Crawford, and Dallin Hall.
For BYU fans, Tripple’s departure is a reminder that even the most beloved underdogs sometimes have to pursue their own path. His next destination may not come with the BYU spotlight, but it will likely come with the playing time he truly deserves.
