Ex-Michigan point guard enters transfer portal for second time

Dug McDaniel will again be looking for a new school. The former Michigan point guard announced on Monday that is entering the transfer portal after one season at Kansas State.

McDaniel appeared in 32 games with 23 starts last season. His 32.2 minutes, 11.4 points, and 1.4 steals per game ranked second on the team and his 4.9 assists ranked first. He shot 38 percent from the field and 26 percent from 3.

The Wildcats went 16-17 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year under head coach Jerome Tang.

McDaniel, a Washington, D.C. native, played his first two college seasons at Michigan. As a freshman in 2022-23, he was forced into the starting lineup in early December after Jaelin Llewellyn suffered a season-ending injury. McDaniel was a season-long starter as a sophomore though he missed six road games due to an academic-related suspension. He led Michigan in minutes, scoring, assists, and steals that season.

Michigan missed the NCAA Tournament both years, finishing 8-24 in 2023-24. Days after then-Michigan head coach Juwan Howard was fired, McDaniel entered the transfer portal. He committed to Kansas State a couple of weeks later.
In nonconference play, McDaniel made one start and was benched for a game. When Big 12 began, he moved into the starting lineup for good and played heavy minutes. In February, he tallied 20 points and five assists in a win at Iowa State, 15 points and 11 assists in a win over Kansas, 24 points in a win vs. Arizona, and 22 in a loss at BYU.
