BYU Faces New Challenges After Keelan Marion’s Exit

With Keelan Marion Gone, What’s Next for BYU?

BYU fans were hit with unexpected bad news on Friday. All-American returner and wide receiver Keelan Marion is transferring. Where does that leave the Cougars in terms of filling his role?

The transfer portal era brings with it constant uncertainty and worry. At any moment, a star player from your favorite team can decide to leave, but it also means schools can potentially add top talent whenever the portal is open.

The spring transfer portal window remains open until next Friday, April 25. BYU’s most significant offseason loss so far is Keelan Marion. He was named the Big 12 Kick Returner of the Year and earned first-team All-American honors as a return specialist, thanks to his two kick return touchdowns last season.

With Darius Lassiter already gone from the receiving corps, Marion was expected to play an even bigger role in both the offense and on special teams. He finished third on the team with 24 receptions for 346 yards.

BYU still has Chase Roberts, who led the team in multiple receiving categories last year. He will need to take on an even larger role this season. The depth behind Roberts, however, is now more uncertain.

So, what’s next for BYU?

The first step could be for BYU to start making calls in the transfer portal. There are plenty of proven wide receivers and return specialists available looking for new teams. BYU has become a more attractive destination, with a dedicated fanbase, an influx of Power Four Conference revenue, and a healthy NIL fund. If necessary, the Cougars should be able to bring in a significant player from the portal.

Who might that be?

One potential standout for BYU could be Johntay Cook, a five-star wide receiver transferring from Texas and later Washington. He boasts SEC-level speed and is known for his track-star abilities. While this would be a huge coup for BYU, it’s unlikely but not entirely out of the question.

A more realistic transfer portal option might be Ryan Pellum, who is leaving Oregon. After redshirting in 2024 for the Ducks, Pellum, a four-star recruit out of Long Beach, CA, could be an intriguing option. BYU had previously shown interest in him during his recruitment process.

However, BYU might have to look within their current roster to find answers. Parker Kingston, an outstanding punt returner last season with two punt return touchdowns, will likely see more playing time and targets with Marion’s departure.

Cody Hagen, who had limited targets last year and contributed on special teams, will also need to step up.

Jojo Phillips made some notable plays last season, including a 57-yard touchdown against Southern Illinois. If he performs well in fall camp, he could secure a larger role in the offense.

Younger players like Tei Nacua and four-star recruit Lamason Waller II might get an unexpected chance to contribute earlier than anticipated.

In the era of the transfer portal, it’s always “next man up” when a player leaves.
