BYU loses All-American Keelan Marion to transfer portal
BYU fans were hit with unexpected news this week—dynamic wide receiver and All-American return specialist Keelan Marion has officially entered the NCAA transfer portal. His departure deals a major blow to the Cougars’ offensive arsenal and sparks concerns about depth ahead of a critical 2025 campaign.
Though Marion was a dependable target at receiver, he made his biggest impact on special teams. In 2024, he averaged an eye-popping 26.2 yards per kick return and scored twice—against Wyoming and bitter rival Utah. That elite production earned him First-Team All-American honors from CBS Sports, Pro Football Focus, and Phil Steele, establishing him as one of the top return threats in the game. With 881 return yards and three total return touchdowns in his career, Marion was a field-position weapon few teams could replicate.
Marion contributed far beyond special teams. He ended last season as BYU’s third-most productive receiver with 24 receptions, 346 yards, and a touchdown, along with two rushing scores. He was projected to start in 2025 next to Chase Roberts. His exit follows an impressive spring camp where he was being counted on as a key piece in BYU’s shifting offense.
His sudden decision to transfer immediately puts pressure on the roster. With the transfer portal closing April 25, BYU has a narrow window to find outside reinforcements. Internally, the spotlight turns to Jojo Phillips, Cody Hagen, Parker Kingston, and promising younger players like Tei Nacua and LaMason Waller. Special teams especially lose a major contributor.
Keelan Marion delivered unforgettable moments to BYU fans—but his exit leaves a void not easily replaced. Kalani Sitake and the Cougars must now act quickly, both in recruiting and in the locker room, to keep their 2025 ambitions intact.
