Lions GM Brad Holmes selects three Georgia players and drafts first-ever Egyptian player.

The Detroit Lions’ general manager selected three Georgia Bulldogs among his seven draft choices — guard Tate Ratledge, safety Dan Jackson, and wide receiver Dominic Lovett.

“Before I got this job, I was living in Atlanta, Georgia, for a long time, just scouting the Southeast,” Holmes said. “And then when the Rams moved to LA, I just stayed in Atlanta. But obviously, I attended Georgia practices a lot and was around that program often. It’s unlike anything else I’ve seen live in terms of college practices, just the intensity.

“(Nick) Saban at Alabama had a very similar environment, but just the intensity, the physicality, the detail, the tempo, the whole atmosphere, the energy. So when you go through that kind of regimen and practice that way, you know those players are prepared.”

In previous drafts, Holmes has also chosen multiple players from Iowa and Alabama. This year, he tapped into another powerhouse program, Ohio State, selecting defensive tackle Tyleik Williams at No. 28 overall in the first round.

“I never really enter a draft thinking we’re targeting Iowa players, Georgia players, or Alabama players, but it just worked out that way, especially as we got into the later rounds,” Holmes said.
