First, Hassanei officially joined the National Football League when the Detroit Lions selected him at No. 196 overall in the 2025 draft, picking the defensive end in the sixth round on Saturday.
However, the unforgettable moment didn’t stop once Hassanei ended his phone call with the Lions — he immediately dropped to one knee and proposed to his girlfriend.
Hassanei’s draft-day conversation with Detroit coach Dan Campbell also left a lasting impression on Lions fans. The former Boise State Broncos edge rusher made headlines for his emotional vow to his new head coach.
“I’ll die for you, coach,” Hassanei said. “I will die on that field for you. I swear I will.”
The video of Hassanei’s conversation with Campbell has already topped 350,000 views on X.
Hassanei also becomes the first Egyptian player ever selected in the NFL Draft. He racked up 22 sacks over his final two seasons playing at Boise State.
