Now that the thrill and excitement of the draft have settled, it’s time to shift focus to one of the more uncomfortable parts of the NFL offseason: figuring out who’s on the chopping block.
In a perfect scenario, the Lions just added four or five future starters from this draft weekend. While that would be a historic haul for Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, it also suggests there are four or five current starters the team isn’t overly committed to. It’s just part of the business. Judging by this year’s draft class, a good number of players are now facing real pressure. But who exactly? Let’s dive into it!
- WR Tim Patrick
It’s probably a bit harsh for Patrick, but that’s the nature of the NFL. After missing two full seasons with injuries, Patrick’s 2024 stats — 33 receptions, 394 yards, 11.9 yards per catch — didn’t quite match the numbers he posted with the Broncos from 2020-2022.
Being another year removed from injuries could help him return to form, but third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa feels like someone who could eventually cut into Patrick’s playing time. (And given the Lions spent a Top 100 pick on him, that seems to be the expectation.) That’s the reality for a 32-year-old wideout on a one-year contract.
- G Graham Glasgow
It’s a little strange to question Glasgow’s job security, but you’re not reading a Lions blog to wax poetic about the passage of time, so let’s keep moving. Glasgow struggled last season: he ranked as Pro Football Focus’ 55th-rated guard and surrendered the most sacks and QB hits of his career.
Dan Campbell has hinted at shifting him back to right guard this offseason, but considering how well Christian Mahogany looked late last year (small sample size acknowledged) and the team’s decision to spend a second-rounder on Georgia’s Tate Ratledge, it’s fair to wonder who might end up losing out. His contract setup makes it easy for Detroit to move on after this season — but that’s a decision for later.
