With the 2025 NFL Draft now complete, it’s time to assess how teams around the league performed and see how the Detroit Lions compare. They appear to have landed a few hidden gems, though nearly every franchise is feeling confident about their picks right now.
This marked the first draft in years without former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Johnson was vital in helping Detroit evaluate offensive prospects, and his influence was clearly seen in Chicago’s draft approach.
The Bears selected Michigan tight end Colston Loveland with the 10th overall pick, then followed that up by drafting Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III in the second round. Speaking after the draft, Johnson said he received a message from a Lions standout applauding the moves.
Jameson Williams texted Johnson, saying, “You got a dog just like me,” referring to Burden. Both players come from St. Louis, Missouri, and it seems they share some kind of connection.
If Burden can replicate even part of Williams’ success, this pick will be a home run. Williams, despite serving suspensions, emerged as one of the NFC’s most explosive playmakers. He hauled in 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, making a strong statement.
Burden is considered by many to be the top slot receiver in this class. He recorded 1,212 yards and nine touchdowns in 2023, though his numbers dipped last year due to inconsistent quarterback play — contributing to his second-round fall. His ability in the return game and broken tackles make him a threat whenever he touches the ball.
With both teams expected to be contenders soon, the rivalry between Johnson’s Bears and his former team will be worth watching. Judging by Williams’ immediate reaction, Johnson appears to be on the right track.
