Ex-Kentucky women’s basketball standout’s WNBA debut cut short before it begins

Kentucky fans had high hopes for women’s basketball standout Georgia Amoore and her future with the Washington Mystics in the WNBA. Selected sixth overall, she was expected to play a major role for the Mystics this season. Unfortunately, she won’t have a chance to hit the court at all this year.

The Mystics revealed that Amoore tore her ACL during Tuesday’s practice and will miss the entire season. Their statement was short, saying that Amoore will start treatment and rehab soon, and more details will be shared when the time is right.

Georgia Amoore had been expected to make her WNBA debut this weekend.

Her injury happened just a few days after the WNBA’s practice sessions got underway. Since the draft followed shortly after the end of the NCAA women’s season, Amoore didn’t have much rest between her college finale and her upcoming pro career.

The Mystics chose Amoore with the sixth pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft. She played four years at Virginia Tech before transferring to Kentucky for her final season, where she became the Wildcats’ leader. During that one year, she started all 31 games, averaging 19.6 points and 6.9 assists. Her shooting ability stood out, hitting 42.3% overall and 33.6% from beyond the arc.

Amoore was projected to have a strong rookie season with Washington, joining forces with sophomore Aaliyah Edwards and rookie Lucy Olsen from Iowa. Her injury news broke just days ahead of the Mystics’ preseason opener on Saturday, May 3, against the Indiana Fever.

Regrettably, the injury will sideline Amoore for the whole season, and her return at the start of next year will depend on how her recovery progresses.
