NFL Draft Pick Signals Likely Reunion Between Lions and Former Player

The Detroit Lions wrapped up the 2025 NFL Draft with seven new rookies. While it wasn’t surprising to see GM Brad Holmes prioritize the trenches by selecting two defensive linemen and two offensive linemen, the total neglect of the EDGE position was unexpected.

Although it was widely agreed that Detroit needed help at EDGE, the Lions have yet to address the issue. Their quiet approach in free agency made sense since quality pass rushers rarely hit the market without a hefty price tag. This led many to believe Detroit would use an early pick to find a starter opposite Aidan Hutchinson.

This increases the chances of a Za’Darius Smith reunion.

After being acquired midseason from the Browns, Smith impressed during his time with the Lions. The 32-year-old recorded four sacks, three tackles for loss, and 10 quarterback hits across eight games, showing he can still contribute at a high level.

Despite that impact, Smith was released following the season, saving the Lions some cap space. However, rumors suggest both parties are open to a reunion, keeping hopes of a return alive.

Smith has reportedly spent time in Detroit this offseason and is still unsigned, even though he remains one of the top free agents available.

Re-signing with the Lions would offer Smith a key role and a strong chance to chase a Super Bowl in his 11th NFL season. Given Detroit’s limited options at this stage, bringing Smith back for 2025 seems like a smart move.
