CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan Predicts Lions Will Sign 4-Time Pro Bowl Defender to Replace Za’Darius Smith

As the 2025 NFL season nears, the Detroit Lions find themselves with a significant gap to fill on the defensive edge opposite Aidan Hutchinson.

Following the offseason release of Za’Darius Smith, Detroit has yet to secure a proven replacement. The team passed on high-profile edge talent in free agency and opted to select Boise State’s Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round—hardly a guaranteed contributor out of the gate.

Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports recently suggested that Matt Judon, a four-time Pro Bowl defender, could be a viable solution. “They added Tyleik Williams in Round 1 to bolster the defensive line,” Sullivan noted. “But there’s still a need for another pass rusher. Judon makes a lot of sense, especially considering his experience.”

Judon, who played for the Falcons last season after a late move from New England, recorded 5.5 sacks—a noticeable dip from his usual output. However, context matters. He was coming off a biceps injury and will turn 33 this August, which might explain the drop in productivity.

Despite his age and recent performance, Detroit doesn’t have the luxury of being selective. With Hutchinson likely to draw double teams, Judon could benefit from favorable matchups and potentially see a resurgence.

Financially, the fit makes sense. Spotrac estimates a deal for Judon could come in at around $8.4 million over two years—far more manageable than the $11 million Detroit avoided paying Smith. A one-year contract might even be on the table, giving the Lions flexibility while shoring up a key position.
