Jon Gruden returns to pro football as team co-owner and advisor

The Super Bowl-winning coach has joined the Nashville Kats of Arena Football One as a part-owner, the team announced Monday.

He will also contribute in advisory and consulting capacities “in all aspects of the team’s football and business operations.”

Kats President and fellow partner Jeff Fisher, a veteran NFL coach who also briefly led the UFL’s Michigan Panthers, shared the news.

B“The Nashville Kats and the Arena Football 1 league are thrilled to have someone with Jon’s background, success, and knowledge on board—not just as an owner, but as an active contributor across the organization,” said Fisher, who also serves as AF1 commissioner.

Gruden previously coached the Oakland Raiders (1998-2001), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-08), and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders (2018-21).

He stepped down as Las Vegas Raiders coach in 2021 after emails surfaced that included racist and homophobic content.

Before that, he guided the Buccaneers to a win in Super Bowl XXXVII against Oakland and was added to Tampa Bay’s Ring of Honor in February.

“I’ve long been a fan of indoor football and jumped at the chance to work with Jeff and the Nashville Kats as part of the ownership group,” Gruden said. “I really admire everything Jeff has accomplished and continues to do with the Kats and as AF1 commissioner. I’m excited to join the effort.”

Gruden’s brother, former Washington Commanders coach Jay Gruden, was an assistant with the Nashville Kats in 1997 before leading the Orlando Predators (1998-2001).

Jay Gruden was inducted into the Arena Football Hall of Fame for his achievements as a player and coach.

“Of course, I followed Jay’s Arena Football career closely and saw how much he loved that time,” Jon Gruden said. “I’m looking forward to feeling that same energy with the Nashville Kats.”
