Lions legend Barry Sanders drops strong, honest truth bomb on Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery ahead of the 2025 NFL season
Barry Sanders Believes Lions’ Backfield Duo Could Be Key to Super Bowl Run
The standout season by Saquon Barkley in Philadelphia has reignited the belief that a strong rushing attack can still drive a team to the Super Bowl. For the Detroit Lions, NFL legend Barry Sanders thinks that formula could work — but with two backs instead of one.
During an interview with USA Today, Sanders expressed strong confidence in the backfield pairing of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. He believes their combination gives Detroit a legitimate shot at building a Super Bowl-caliber offense centered around the run game.
According to Sanders, “They’re the best pair of running backs in the league right now, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. If this team is destined to win it all soon, those two will be at the heart of it.”
Sanders has long admired Montgomery’s consistent production, even before he joined the Lions from the Bears. And when Montgomery was sidelined by injury last season, Gibbs stepped in and proved he could carry the load as a featured back.
Sanders continued, “Montgomery has had a strong career and fit in perfectly behind this offensive line. And Gibbs—what he did last season really showed he’s a special talent. He’s been solid since arriving, but last year he took a big step forward.”
Detroit had its most successful regular season in decades, yet came up short in the playoffs. Sanders believes that if the Lions are going to finally break through in the postseason, their ground game — powered by Montgomery and Gibbs — will be the engine that drives them.
