Matthew Stafford has already made one major move in his career, transitioning from the Detroit Lions to the Los Angeles Rams in one of the most significant quarterback trades in NFL history.
It appears Stafford wasn’t interested in making another big change.
According to Albert Breer of SI.com, two teams were prepared to offer Stafford a contract worth approximately \$50 million annually, placing him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. However, Stafford opted to remain with the Rams, accepting a deal that paid notably less to avoid relocating his family.
As Breer noted, Stafford drew considerable interest earlier this year after he requested and received permission from the Rams to explore trade options and negotiate a new contract. Breer reported that the Rams believed Stafford wouldn’t want to move his family again after the 2021 trade that sent him from the Lions to the Rams.
“The Los Angeles Rams’ gamble in February and March, when they allowed Stafford to explore a trade and a new contract, was based on their belief that the quarterback valued the life he had built with his four kids in the area and his relationship with Sean McVay. They were right,” Breer wrote.
Ultimately, Stafford decided to stay in Los Angeles, agreeing to a new deal worth \$84 million over the next two years. Though the outcome was favorable for both sides, Breer mentioned that Stafford could have secured a substantial pay raise from one of the other interested teams.
“However, the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders were willing to go much higher, into a range where the average annual salary would start with a five,” Breer wrote.
Before Stafford’s contract extension, there was speculation regarding whether the Rams would pursue a younger quarterback or continue with the veteran Stafford. Following their Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season, the team underwent a swift rebuild, cutting large contracts and incorporating young talent, ultimately advancing to the NFC divisional round last season.

The Rams chose to stick with Stafford, who had already delivered a Super Bowl win to the franchise. Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed optimism that Stafford would remain their starter for at least a few more seasons.
“With him at the helm, we always have a chance, and I really enjoy working with him. I think he can play as long as he wants, but ideally, we’re hoping it’s for a couple more years,” McVay said to Adam Schein on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio.
McVay also noted that discussions with Stafford had been productive, ultimately leading to an agreement that satisfied both parties.
“When you’re able to have open conversations with people you care about, it can either pull you apart or bring you closer. In this case, there’s no doubt we’re closer than ever. I’m truly grateful that we could work through thes
