Matthew Judon Could Be the Ideal Late Free-Agent Addition for Lions Before OTAs
As the Detroit Lions shift focus to rookie minicamps and upcoming organized team activities (OTAs), they still have time to address a few gaps on their 90-man roster. One area that could use reinforcement is the edge rusher position, especially with star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson still recovering from a serious leg injury involving both the tibia and fibula.
While the Lions did select edge rusher Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, many fans were hoping for a more impactful addition at that position. Fortunately, there are still some viable free agents available — including veteran pass rusher Matthew Judon, who could be a great fit in Detroit.
Judon, who spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons, appears unlikely to return after the team invested two first-round picks in edge defenders Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr. That opens the door for a team like Detroit, which is looking for experienced depth along the defensive front.
Despite missing much of the 2023 season due to injury, Judon made a solid return in 2024, notching 5.5 sacks, 41 tackles, seven tackles for loss, nine QB hits, five pass breakups, and even a pick-six. Though his Pro Football Focus grades were below average — a 53.9 pass rush grade and a 53.6 run defense rating — a more talented supporting cast in Detroit could help him thrive.
Financially, Judon’s projected value sits at around two years for $8.4 million, according to Spotrac. Given Detroit’s recent strategy of short-term deals for veteran defenders, a one-year “prove-it” contract might be more realistic. Returning to his hometown of Pontiac, Michigan, to join a Super Bowl-caliber roster could make such an offer attractive for Judon.
As OTAs approach, this could be a low-risk, high-upside move that both strengthens the Lions’ pass rush and adds veteran leadership to a young, hungry team.
