From NFL Owners Meetings, Dan Campbell Shares Insights on New Staff and Upcoming Season
Lions head coach Dan Campbell is attending the NFL owners meetings in Florida, where he had a one-on-one conversation with FOX 2.
This offseason was a busy one for the Lions, as Campbell had to find replacements for both his offensive and defensive coordinators.
He also addressed the difficulty of recovering from the team’s playoff loss last season.
FOX 2 – Dan Campbell’s met with FOX 2 during an offseason that’s been unusually active in Allen Park.
The Lions coach is in Palm Beach, Florida, for the 2025 NFL owners meetings, where he spoke to FOX 2 Sports Director Dan Miller.
Campbell said the sting of the Divisional Round defeat to the Commanders, after earning the NFC’s top seed, still lingers.
“It’s frustrating and painful, but it drives you,” Campbell explained. “You either win it all or you’re back in line with the others trying to get it, and that’s where we stand.”
He emphasized that the team stumbled when it mattered most, and now the mission is to repeat their run — but finish it this time.
“The question is, do you still have that hunger? Are you still ready to fight, or are you tired of the hits?” he said. “Where’s your mindset? Your attitude? I think I know the answer, but I’m still going to test them.”
The Lions have solidified their coaching changes, free agency has mostly wrapped, and the 2025 NFL Draft is just weeks away.
New hires include Kelvin Sheppard as defensive coordinator and John Morton as offensive coordinator. Morton and Campbell go back to their coaching days with the Saints.
More recently, Morton served as senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022, and Campbell says their relationship is built on trust.
“I believe in John Morton,” Campbell said. “He knows Goff, Saint, Sewell, Frank—you name it. He’s familiar with our people and our system.”
“Much of what we’ve built here, Johnny had a hand in from the start,” Campbell added.
Another important hire is David Shaw, former Stanford head coach, who will serve as the team’s new passing game coordinator. He previously coached with Morton under Jon Gruden.
On defense, Sheppard was promoted from linebackers coach to coordinator. Campbell praised the familiarity and energy he brings.
“I think Shep is going to do a fantastic job,” said Campbell. “He’s DC material now, and I believe he’ll be a head coach one day. The players respect and trust him. He knows how to demand effort while relating to their experience.”
