Lions’ Dan Campbell Reflects on Offseason Changes and Team Mindset at NFL Owners Meetings

While attending the 2025 NFL owners meetings in Palm Beach, Florida, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell sat down for a one-on-one conversation with FOX 2 Sports Director Dan Miller. Campbell opened up about the eventful offseason and the emotional impact of last season’s abrupt playoff exit.

Following a heartbreaking loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round—despite entering the postseason as the NFC’s top seed—Campbell said the defeat remains a source of motivation. “It’s painful and disappointing, but it fuels you,” he said. “Unless you win the Super Bowl, you’re back in the mix with everyone else trying to win it the next year.”

Now, the goal is to replicate their regular-season success and close the deal in the playoffs. Campbell emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s drive and mental toughness. “You’ve got to ask yourself, are you still hungry? Are you still willing to take the hits?” he said. “I believe I know the answer, but I’m going to test that mindset.”

This offseason brought significant changes to the coaching staff, with both coordinators being replaced. On offense, John Morton steps into the coordinator role. Morton previously worked with Campbell on the Saints staff and served as the Lions’ senior offensive assistant in 2022. Campbell highlighted Morton’s familiarity with key players like Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown, as well as his role in shaping the current system. “Johnny helped build this from the start. I trust him completely,” Campbell said.

Former Stanford head coach David Shaw also joins the staff as the team’s passing game coordinator. He and Morton share coaching roots from their time under Jon Gruden.

On the defensive side, Kelvin Sheppard has been promoted from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator. Campbell praised Sheppard’s leadership and rapport with the players. “He’s ready. The guys respect him, and he gets what it means to play in this league,” Campbell said, adding that Sheppard has the qualities of a future head coach.

With free agency mostly settled and the 2025 NFL Draft fast approaching, Campbell and the Lions are focused on refining their roster and mindset for another Super Bowl push.
