The Detroit Lions endured a rough streak of injuries on defense during the 2024 season, but the upside of the chaos was crucial reps for others.
Several players were tasked with keeping the team on track, and with Detroit finishing 15-2 and earning the NFC’s top seed, they succeeded. Though their playoff collapse was disappointing, the tough lessons may pay off in 2025.
One of the key figures last season was linebacker Jack Campbell, who rose to the occasion when Alex Anzalone missed time. In his second NFL year, Campbell stepped up as a leader and drew major praise for his performance.
PFF analyst Dalton Wasserman spotlighted players who could soon be elite at their positions, naming Campbell his linebacker choice. His reasoning? Campbell stayed on the field and, outside two rough games, thrived against both the run and pass.
“The Lions’ defense took heavy injury hits in 2024, but Jack Campbell remained healthy and made big strides after a shaky rookie year. His 78.7 PFF grade ranked 10th among all linebackers last season.”
“Campbell’s scores were pulled down by tough games vs. Houston and Buffalo. Take those out, and his grade jumps to 86.9 — which would’ve placed him fourth across the full year.”
“Even with those games counted, Campbell was one of only three linebackers to crack the top 15 in both run defense and pass coverage grades.”
Campbell’s 2024 stat line also showed real growth. Starting all 17 games, he logged 131 tackles, five passes defended, and one forced fumble — all career bests. It shows he’s on the rise from his No. 18 draft spot.
This year could be defining for Campbell. Anzalone, extended in 2023 for three years, becomes a free agent in 2026. Now 30, he may not be part of Detroit’s long-term plan.
Campbell has closely studied Anzalone’s approach and is now primed to take over leadership duties both on and off the field. If he continues progressing, the Lions may face an easier choice.
If Campbell grows as PFF and Wasserman expect, it would be a major boost for Detroit. A high-end linebacker opens up flexibility and eases the burden on Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez.
Many questioned the Lions’ decision to take Campbell in the first round in 2023, but his breakout is happening. If he ascends into the league’s top tier, it will be a massive win for the franchise.
