1,200-Yard Michigan-born Anthony Tyus III Signs with Detroit Lions

Despite already boasting one of the NFL’s top rushing units in 2024, the Detroit Lions continued to strengthen their backfield this offseason by picking up an overlooked but promising talent.

One notable addition came through the undrafted free agent route: Anthony Tyus III, a Michigan-born running back who exploded for a standout senior campaign.

Anthony Tyus III Joins Detroit After Impressive Year at Ohio

On May 9, the Lions revealed their list of undrafted rookie signings, among them Tyus, who transferred to Ohio University after three quieter years at Northwestern. In his lone season with the Bobcats, Tyus ran for 1,215 yards and nine scores, averaging more than 93 yards per game and over five yards per carry. He also contributed as a receiver with 16 catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Tyus’s leap in production was significant. His combined output in three seasons at Northwestern fell short of 600 total yards. But in 2024, he flourished in Ohio’s high-powered offense, more than doubling his previous career totals.

MLive.com’s Matthew Ehler described Tyus as a physical, 6-foot-1, 226-pound power runner who showed up in key moments. Tyus eclipsed 100 rushing yards in each of his last four games, including a 151-yard outing in the MAC Championship blowout win over Miami (OH), followed by another 100-yard effort in a Cure Bowl win against Jacksonville State.

Possible Role in Detroit’s Deep Backfield

Earning a spot on Detroit’s final 53-man roster won’t be easy, but Colton Pouncy of The Athletic noted that Tyus offers a mix of size and reliability. Clocked at 4.59 in the 40-yard dash and weighing 220 pounds, he’s known for picking up speed in the open field and holding his own in pass protection—qualities that could earn him a spot on the practice squad.

The Lions’ backfield is already in good hands with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, who combined to form one of the league’s most effective one-two punches last season. Franchise legend Barry Sanders even called them the best tandem in the NFL and essential to Detroit’s Super Bowl hopes.

Montgomery brought consistency and experience from his years with the Bears, while Gibbs offered electric playmaking in what Sanders saw as a breakout year. With Tyus now in the mix, the Lions continue to build depth behind a dominant ground game.
