The title of the league’s top running back group has been awarded to the Detroit Lions, according to a CBS Sports analyst.
Jahmyr Gibbs and Gibbs Montgomery, famously dubbed Sonic and Knuckles, combined for over 2,000 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns last season, solidifying themselves as the NFL’s most dominant backfield duo.
“Montgomery brings the muscle to the ground game, while Gibbs brings the spark — and he’s just hitting his stride,” wrote CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan.
He backs up his case by noting they’re the first running back tandem in NFL history to each score 10+ rushing touchdowns in back-to-back seasons. Gibbs also led the NFL in 2024 with 20 total touchdowns.
“Don’t forget, this team once had Barry Sanders in its backfield, so what Gibbs is doing right now is truly extraordinary,” Sullivan added. “The ability for them to keep one another rested is a major asset for Detroit’s high-performing offense.”
On that note, the legendary Barry Sanders himself backs up the claim that this duo is second to none.
“They’re the top running back pair in the league, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon,” Sanders told USA TODAY. “If we’ve got a Super Bowl run ahead, those two will absolutely be at the heart of it.”
