Former Lions Assistant Coach Leaves Coaching Position

It’s always tough to hear when a well-regarded coach takes a step back — especially one who left a lasting mark in Detroit. Former Detroit Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams is currently sidelined from his new duties with the New England Patriots because of an undisclosed medical condition

Following a 2024 stint in Detroit under Dan Campbell, Terrell Williams accepted a new job with the Patriots this offseason, taking over as defensive coordinator for Mike Vrabel. It was seen as a promotion and a significant career advancement for Williams.

Unfortunately, Williams won’t be attending New England’s rookie minicamp because of a health issue. Although specifics haven’t been shared publicly, the Patriots’ coaching team remains hopeful.

Despite not being physically present, head coach Mike Vrabel stressed that Williams remains highly engaged — just from afar.

“I talk to him every day,” Vrabel told ESPN. “Terrell can’t wait to return. We’re looking forward to having him back. He’s kept in touch with the players via Zoom, and he’s stayed involved with me and the staff.”

Vrabel didn’t share a timeline for his return, but his remarks indicate that Williams is staying connected and doing his best to contribute virtually.

In his one year with the Lions, Williams helped transform Detroit’s defensive front into one of the NFL’s most improved groups. His guidance helped young players develop and drew praise from across the organization.

His departure this offseason was a tough loss for Lions fans, but his new opportunity in New England reflects how respected he is throughout the league.

Terrell Williams made a difference in Detroit and quickly took on a greater role in New England. Though he’s currently away for medical reasons, it’s clear he remains committed to supporting the team. Fans in Detroit — and all around the NFL — are surely wishing him a strong and speedy recovery.
