Former Lions Coach Hints at Strong Interest in Acquiring Detroit Star

The Detroit Lions experienced a significant coaching shakeup this offseason, with several staffers departing — one of them being Aaron Glenn. He took over as head coach of the New York Jets, the team he played eight seasons for during his NFL career.

Glenn has the challenge of reviving the Jets franchise, and his recent comments suggested he’d jump at the chance to land WR Jameson Williams in a trade. While speaking during rookie minicamp, he reflected on how Detroit shaped his path to a head coaching role, highlighting Dan Campbell’s major influence.

Glenn added, “Jamo was in my office at 7:30 every morning. We’d just sit and talk.” That connection seems to have left a lasting impression on both.

There have been rumors circulating this offseason about a possible trade involving Williams, but nothing has materialized. The Jets already have Garrett Wilson, who’s due for a contract extension soon. Still, adding someone like Williams remains a tempting scenario.

New York is desperate for another dynamic wide receiver, and Williams could instantly upgrade the position. While Detroit likely isn’t eager to part ways with the former Alabama star, no move in the NFL is ever completely off the table.

Williams, who dealt with injuries during his first two years, broke out in 2024. He recorded career bests in receptions (58), receiving yards (1,001), touchdowns (7), and yards per catch (17.3).

Detroit exercised the fifth-year option on Williams, securing him through 2026. With Super Bowl aspirations and the loss of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to Chicago, they’ll want to hold on to all offensive firepower.

There’s a lot of uncertainty around Williams’ future, but what’s clear is the deep connection between him and Glenn. Despite being a defensive coordinator, Glenn always took time to engage with all players — something that proved valuable as he stepped into a head coaching role.

That special relationship is something Glenn holds dear — and one he’d love to rekindle with Williams in New York.
