One of the more intriguing offseason storylines for the Detroit Lions involves the battle for the backup quarterback spot. With Jared Goff remaining impressively durable, the Lions have solid footing at starter. Yet, having a reliable second option is still a priority for the coaching staff.
At this point in the offseason, Detroit is evaluating its internal options. While Hendon Hooker appears to be the front-runner, his position as the primary backup is far from secured. Quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell recently commented that the competition behind Goff is still active, although he noted that Hooker has made a solid early impression.
Hooker Faces Stiff Competition for QB2 Role
The race for the backup job this year features Hooker and veteran Kyle Allen. Both lack substantial starting experience and likely project as lower-tier backups. Despite this, Hooker’s athletic ability and arm talent give him a potential edge.
There’s also speculation about whether Detroit might seek external help. Free agent Carson Wentz remains an option, especially given his experience and compatibility with the system Goff has thrived in. If the team decides to stick with its current roster, Hooker is clearly the more promising candidate.
Allen might bring steadiness, but he’s unlikely to lead a comeback or steal a win in relief. In contrast, Hooker offers a higher ceiling, even if he brings more volatility. The Lions’ decision to spend a third-round pick on him speaks to their belief in his potential, signaling that he isn’t just being groomed as a third-stringer.
While Hooker hasn’t officially locked up the QB2 job, unless the Lions sign another quarterback unexpectedly, it’s likely only a matter of time before he secures that role.
