Detroit Lions

Trey Hendrickson’s recent remarks give the Lions strong reason to reconsider a trade.

The Detroit Lions are among the NFL teams with the most available cap space heading into 2025, according to Over the Cap. With $42.3 million in cap room, they could feasibly pursue a marquee name in free agency—or potentially swing a trade for a top-tier player and extend him shortly after.

However, the team also must factor in looming extensions for young stars like Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs, who hit free agency in 2027. That makes the possibility of trading for another big name more complicated, as the front office will want to maintain financial flexibility for its core players.

This brings us to Trey Hendrickson. The Bengals’ premier pass rusher and 2024 sack leader has recently voiced frustration over contract talks with Cincinnati, expressing a desire to either be traded or extended. He criticized the organization, including HC Zac Taylor, who allegedly threatened fines if he didn’t suit up.

Hendrickson also told the media he won’t play without a new contract—whether he’s in Cincinnati or elsewhere. That’s a major sticking point for the Lions and makes the idea of trading for him a tough sell.

Speaking during a workout session, Hendrickson mentioned that discussions with fellow pass rushers across the league helped him gauge his value to both his current team and others.

“Luckily, I’ve built good relationships with guys like Danielle Hunter, Myles Garrett, and Maxx Crosby at the Pro Bowl,” he said. “And their organizations have rightfully rewarded their effort, work ethic, and drive to win.”

By referencing other elite pass rushers, Hendrickson is giving insight into the kind of salary he expects. Garrett made headlines with his historic contract from the Browns, while Crosby secured a massive new deal with the Raiders this offseason.

Lions insider Mike Payton has repeatedly emphasized that Detroit is unlikely to offer a deal comparable to those signed by Garrett or Crosby, which is quickly becoming a prerequisite for any team hoping to trade for Hendrickson and get him on the field in 2025.
